Your Dog’s First Day at Doggy Daycare: What to Expect
It can be very exciting to bring your dog to daycare for the first time, but it is completely normal to have questions. Will they make friends? Will they be comfortable in a new environment? What will their day look like?
At Barker’s Farm, we understand that every dog has a unique personality, energy level, and comfort zone. Our goal is to provide a welcoming environment where dogs can enjoy exercise, enrichment, outdoor play, and personalized care while their owners go about their day.
Whether your dog is naturally outgoing or needs a little extra time to warm up, here’s what you can expect during their first daycare experience at Barker’s Farm.
The Meet-and-Greet
Before your dog begins daycare, we want to make sure Barker’s Farm is a good fit for them. Though it is not required, our meet-and-greet allows us to get to know your dog, observe their behavior, and help them become familiar with our environment. It also gives you a chance to see our facility, ask questions, and learn more about how we run things.
Every dog is evaluated individually. We consider their temperament, comfort around people and other dogs, socialization, and the needs of the dogs currently in our care. Not every dog enjoys group play, and that’s okay! Our priority is finding an appropriate care arrangement whenever possible.
Settling Into a New Environment
Just like you and me, dogs respond differently to new experiences. While some dogs are ready to explore and play immediately, others may need time to sniff around, observe their surroundings, and become more comfortable.
During their first visit, we pay attention to each dog’s behavior and comfort level. We want daycare to be a positive experience, not an overwhelming one. Owners can help by keeping drop-off calm and positive. A cheerful goodbye or a relaxed attitude, for example, can help your dog feel more confident about the new environment.
Remember, your dog does not have to become best friends with everyone on day one; feeling safe and comfortable is the best place to start!
A Full Day of Play, Exercise, and Enrichment
Our farm-style setting offers a little over an acre of fully fenced outdoor space where dogs can enjoy outdoor activities. With room to run, explore, sniff, and play, daycare gives dogs opportunities for physical activity and mental stimulation.
Depending on each dog’s needs and the weather, their day may include:
Outdoor play and exploration
Opportunities to socialize with compatible dogs
Sniffing, exploring, and enjoying the sights and sounds of the farm
Indoor activities when weather conditions are not suitable for outdoor play
Breaks and downtime as needed
We believe a great daycare includes appropriate activities, attentive care, and safe supervision throughout the day.
Different Dogs = Personalized Care
A successful daycare day does not have to look the same for every dog. Sometimes it is a full day of running and playing; other times, it’s a slower-paced day with more space and individual attention.
Not every dog wants to spend the entire day playing with other dogs. Some prefer having their own space, while others may be older, shy, anxious, or just happier with a quieter routine. That is why we recognize that one approach does not work for every dog.
Depending on the dog’s needs and our assessment, individual play areas, separate play arrangements, or leash walks may be available upon request. We take each dog’s personality and comfort level into consideration when determining an appropriate routine.
“What Should I Bring?”
Preparing ahead of time can make your dog’s first day go smoothly. Before arriving, make sure you have:
Required vaccination records: Have your dog’s required vaccination documentation ready before daycare. This can be a physical copy upon arrival or an email form from you or your vet.
Important health information: Let us know about allergies, medications, medical conditions, or other special care instructions.
Behavioral information: Tell us about any anxiety, resource guarding, sensitivities, or other behaviors that could affect your dog’s experience.
Feeding instructions: If your dog needs a meal during the day, let us know their feeding schedule and any dietary requirements.
Please share any information you believe may help us care for your dog safely and comfortably. Knowing your dog’s needs ahead of time helps us provide more individualized care.
“Will My Dog Be Tired When They Get Home?”
There is a good chance that your dog will be ready for some relaxation after a day of new sights, smells, movement, and experiences! Physical activity and mental stimulation can leave dogs ready for a nap. Some dogs may sleep soundly after daycare, while others may still have plenty of energy.
Every dog responds differently, especially during their first few visits. Give your dog time to rest, provide access to fresh water, and allow them to settle back into their normal routine. As your dog becomes familiar with daycare, you may notice changes in how they settle in and recover after their visits.
